Hey guys, I've got a 2001 Venture van with a 3.4 and roughly 130,000 miles on it...it was a wet day today, and while I was driving along it died, no apparent cause. I stopped, started it again, and it immediately died. Again, I started it, same thing. Start again, it ran, as soon as I put it in gear, it shut off.
So I tried cycling the key a few times, restarted it, and it ran, I pulled around the corner into a gas station. Let it idle for a few minutes, all was fine, I drove it back home (was just around the block) normally. Any thoughts?

It was raining, wet roads, cold temperatures. I'm thinking wiring, or water in the fuel somehow...any input would be appreciated. Thanks folks

Cooling system issue of some kind

Well folks, I could use some insight on this matter.

I have some kind of cooling system issue, the vehicle in question is a 1996 Chevy Lumina van with the 3400 and about 176,000 miles.

Recently I've noticed some new characteristics, when I start driving in the mornings (or evenings now since I work nights), the temp gauge will shoot all the way up to overheat after just a few minutes of driving, then plummet back down to roughly where it should be, somewhere between cold and operating temperature. It will then sometimes repeat this process, or simply proceed to warm up to normal operating temp and stay there (with mild flucuations depending on how cold it is outside). I also occasionally hear gurgling noises inside the passenger compartment. This made me think of an air pocket, so I finally opened the hood(haven't for a while, changed jobs, not in a shop anymore) and I find the level of coolant in the reservoir has tripled since I last saw it, and the radiator is considerably down (meaning that I can't see how high up the coolant is, I can only see the innards of the radiator).

I haven't been able to check very thoroughly yet, but there are no obvious signs of coolant leaking out (no puddles, no steam, no smells), the block looks fairly dry, the hoses are good. The radiator is about 2 years old, the LIM gaskets (on its third set now) are about 15,000 of your American miles old, the head gaskets are original. I checked the oil, there is no sign of coolant, and no snot on the oil cap. I haven't noticed any huge amount of steam coming from the exhaust, although I haven't paid much attention to it until I noticed this issue was more than just me hallucinating. At some point soon I'm going to take it to my old shop and pressure test the system to see if there is pressure loss, and I have some die & a UV light that I'll use to see if I can spot an external leak. There have been no engine lights, no obvious misfiring, no change in 'performance'.

So to recap, the symptoms are:
1. Temp gauge skyrockets to hot when the engine is still cold then plummets back to near-cold, sometimes repeats, other times proceeds normally from there
2. Suddenly very low coolant in radiator
3. Suddenly triple the amount of coolant there was a month ago in the reservoir

I also recall one morning a month ago, while I was brushing snow off, as it was running, the exhaust sounded a bit funny, almost like it had a miss, but no codes ever came up and it has never done it since. It was cold as f*** that morning, maybe that had something to do with it?

I have a bad feeling there's a head gasket going bad, and I'm losing compression into the coolant, but before I jump to any conclusions, as I said above, I could use some other people's insight.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi again guys. I haven't posted in a while. Been very busy with job, house, kids, etc....

I still have my 02 intrigue (175k). I managed to get through the last 2 years with only my AC going out. I got that fixed though. Shop put in a rebuilt compressor and condenser, works great again.

Anyway, that was over a year ago. I just spent quite a bit of time and money on the car and thought I'd get back to this forum again. I bought new tires (General Altimax HP), did the brakes (rotors and pads), got an alignment and discovered I had a really severe vibration under acceleration. I hadn't noticed before because with the brakes and tires wearing out, it was vibrating all the time

Anyway, I just replaced the axles/CV joints myself for the first time. It was an adventure. Once I got the ball joints, sway bars, and tie rods apart, I pushed the drivers side axle through the hub and the inner CV just fell apart in my hands. There was grease all over the side of transmission. I guess I discovered the problem!

Long story short, I had to replace the tie rod ends (rubber boots disintegrated when I look them off the knuckle) but everything is great again. I had it aligned again on Monday and it drives like new again.

I'm going to try and clean the car up this weekend and take some pics. Glad to be back.

well, it is a sad day for me, but after the hurricane a few weeks ago, I had to sit down and seriously consider my cars. 3 of my cars got flooded in all the rain we got, and when I was working to dry them out, I said "enough is enough".

I don't have the time, money, or energy to fix up my projects. I am going to cut my losses and get rid of most of my fleet. I have already started stripping my 1988 Cutlass Supreme (the gold car), and my 1990 Grand Prix STE. Once they are stripped out of all their good stuff, I am calling the wrecker to come get them. The black 1992 is ready to go now, as well as the pink 1996. That will leave me with my 1994 Cutlass Supreme vert, and my 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII. Once I am sure the Mark VIII is stable, I am going to sell the vert to a friend of mine, and just wash my hands of w-bodies.

I am just going to keep the newest car in my fleet, and maybe one day, I will get back into GM's.

I've messed with this thing a lot these past couple weeks. A lot of it has been replacing worn out odds and ends like some wiring, hoses, belt...all kinds of stuff here and there. Today after replacing the radiator[my old one was all beat up and half the fins were flattened, pulled it out of an 88 Buick], I noticed that only my right cooling fan[standing in front of the car facing the engine] was kicking in. I let the car run for an hour...the coolant cycled over and over and each time, only that one fan kicked in. So I went back to that Buick and yanked the left fan. Put it on my car and it still would not turn on for anything. Do these fans each turn on independently or do I have a wiring issue somewhere? If it is a wiring issue, can I run a parallel circuit from the working fan to the non-working one?

Also, I cleaned up the engine compartment. It used to look like someone smeared s#1t all over it, and then two bottles of LA's Totally Awesome Cleaner and a pressure wash later, it looks brand new. Here's some B&A pics for you all. Sorry in advance for the discombobulated sizes and pic quality; Photobucket fails and I used my cell cam

Junkyard Stories?

A trip to the junkyard today turned out pretty odd. It was my first REAL trip to the junkyard today[the first trip was in and out, I didn't have enough detail and I grabbed the wrong part.]

I was wondering if anyone else has had an odd find or interesting day at the junkyard. Post a story or share comments on someone else's story.

My story starts off with my 89 Olds CS International. I had taken a quick trip a few weeks ago to the junkyard, had them look up a compatible replacement list. I searched a couple cars in the yard and ended up pulling an A/C compressor. Bolted it on and realized it didn't have the right high/low pressure sensors. I drove around with it for a few weeks with no problems aside from the A/C not blowing cold air.

Today's trip was so odd because I called my mom asking if I could pick up a few tools from the garage at her house. She said yes, then asked if she could ride with me to look for some doors and a carb for her truck. She showed me the way to a junkyard that just opened here that I'd never been to.

We went in and parted ways. I headed to the GM cars section and she headed to the GM truck section in the back. After I browsed a few compatible vehicles, she called me and told me she found one of our old vehicles, a '78 Chevy C-10 Custom Deluxe. I didn't believe her, as we haven't owned this truck for 12 years and the junkyard just opened this year[im 19 now].

I walked over to where she was, and there it was. The truck my mom bought for $100 when I was probably 8. I knew without a doubt that was the same one when I saw the same aluminum tape my mom used to patch some rusted spots on the body; and the blue spray paint peeling away, revealing the original red color. I looked around a little more and the Edelbrock valve covers were still on it, along with the sticker on the driver's side back window.

I looked around and took a short video of it, then my mom asked if we could go. We walked back to the door and on my way, and something caught my eye....a green Cutlass a couple years older than mine at the most with the same A/C controls. I took note of where it was and just as I closed the door, I saw a box of brake pads sitting in the back seat. They looked exactly like the ones my car uses so I grabbed them. They turned out to be the same ones so I decided I'm gonna pull the decent looking rotors I saw in the second yard I went to and have them turned.

The second yard I stopped at yielded the correct A/C compressor. While I was under the car, an 89 Pontiac Grand Prix, I noticed that the transmission in it was pretty shiny and new-looking.

So all in all my day digging through junkyards came out to be pretty interesting.
