Trouble with heat in Climate Controlled Cutlass
My 97 Cutlass Supreme S is having issues with the heat that I just discovered when we got 7" of snow yesterday. After a few weeks of 70*+ weather I went to use the heater and got a cold air mix. I have duel zone CC and I could feel a little warm air and a little cool air. No matter where I set the flow (floor, Bi-level or Upper) it was all the same. I even turned on the Pass control and cranked it up with no luck. I ran all winter with no issue but all the sudden it showed up. Anyone ever remove the heat/air box from behind the dash? It appears I have a door flap issue inside the box. Also are these flaps still Vacuum controlled or electrical motors....

Thanks

RE: Trouble with heat in Climate Controlled Cutlass
The temp doors are ELECTRIC. Easiest way to check them is do the passenger side (since you have dual zone).

First of all, the control head (display) could have gone bad. That is a common problem, and seeing that you have dual zone, it is unlikly that BOTH temp door motors or flaps broke at the same time.

On the passenger side, pull off your glove bo door (remove the trim cover under the dash, then there are some screws along the bottom (3 I think). You can then open the glove box, and remove the whole thing.

Next, look for the temp door motor. It goes into the side of the box and is a kinda triangle shaped thing with an electrical connector sticking out the side. Unplug the connector, and there should be 2 5.5 mm screws that hold it in. That it off. Start the car and warm it up. Once warm, turn the blower on, and manually turn the temp door (there will be a thing sticking out that the motor is attached too). Just twist it, and see if the temp changes.

If it does, next plug the temp door motor back in, but do NOT install it. Adjust the passenger control from hot to cold, and see if the middle part moves. If it DOES, then you have a heater core issue.

If it does NOT, then either the temp door motor is bad, or the climate control unit is bad.

Thanks for the reply, I noticed today when the temp outside got up to 60*, and the Pass side was still on and set to heat that there was heat on the passenger side of the car ( it's just not hot) and then when I turned it to cool it also reacted with cool air. I can feel heat in the system, but I can also feel that cool air is mixing with it as well. From the Chiltons diagram (multi car coverage) it appers that there are several trap doors in the system that control the flow and mix of air. Anyone ever had the assembly under the dash off? Is it hard to do?

I have had it out, and the only way to totally remove it all is to pull the entire dash out of the car. You can take some of the things apart, but only so far up into it.

There are several trap doors, but for the temp control, there is only 1..... Well, in your case 2, but it is just the same area divided with a door on each side.

The air flow has a lot of doors, but that is only to direct air flow from either the defroster vents, to the floor, to your face, etc. For the temp, there is only the one door, and they don't usually break.

interchange for the Cutlass Supreme is 1995-1997. All are the same (digital, that is).

Ok, I have checked out the Temp control motor and it is functioning. I have moved the temp control arm manually and it is working. The CC head also checks out and I still have different temps on the dual zone and am not able to maintain heat or A/C. Chilton's shows 2 Elect. motors controlling Dual zone but I cannot see them at this time. With the dash panel off and vents above CC Control open I have hot air on Pass side and Warm air on Drivers side. Here's a pic of the temp motor plus air flow controllers that are all working.

One of the temp door motors is in that pic (the red clip behind the round thing). That is the PASSENGER temp motor.

The DRIVERS temp motor is on the opposite side (drivers side).

If you remove the motor, and manually move the doors, and the temp is fine (distinct hot and cold), then the problem is the AC control unit is not mixing right, and is probably bad.

Ok, Found the drivers side motor turning but not the whole way around the area of the indentation. Took it apart and found the gear split so.......

Anyone have one of these laying around, maybe dead that a gear can be slavaged from? Are these motors available aftermarket or do I have to contact a dealer.

Thanks

I have a couple of spare ones somewhere. I think I can find them, and send you one or two (as long as you are not in canada). I can't affored to ship that far.

Well, @ $249. new from GM I guess I will be trying to either glue the wheel back together or scrounge the salvage yards for a replacement........

I would scrounge the salvage yards. Those things are plentiful. Easiest cars to get it out of are the GEN 1 cars with the newer dash. You can remove the glove box to get to it easier.
